Unboxing

Motorola Moto G is one of the most anticipated smartphones, and to some extent it did what Moto X could never accomplish, give Motorola the international stage it was looking for to make a comeback. Moto G is a budget device and comes in both single and dual-SIM variants. Today we have the dual-SIM Moto G for you, its the Indian retail unit. Being a budget device, Motorola sure had to cut some corners, but none of them are in the specs or performance department. With a Android 4.4 KitKat update already promised and available in some parts of the world, Moto G is the budget shopper's Nexus 5. So here's our unboxing of the Moto G Dual-SIM retail Indian variant.

In the Box

Motorola generally packs in a user guide and a USB cable with the Moto G in most regions. But in India the Moto G comes with a Wired Wall charger, a headset, a getting started guide in both Hindi and English as well as warranty statements. However, we expected a USB wall charger in the package since we could have used the USB cable separately.

Accessories

Above is an image of everything you get inside the box, all laid out.

Hardware Overview

Moto G features a 4.5-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display which is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 MSM8226 processor coupled with 1 GB RAM and a choice of 8 GB or 16 GB storage which unfortunately is not expandable. The graphics on the phone are powered by Adreno 305 and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean also brings in support for OpenGL ES 3.0.

Camera Back

There's a 5 MP primary camera with LED flash which is capable of recording 720p video at 30 FPS alongwith a 1.3 MP front-facing shooter. Motorola says that the Moto G's 2070 mAh battery can power it for a full day's use. We will definitely check out that claim. Coming to the Sensors the Moto G Dual-SIM has the following:

  • Accelerometer
  • Proximity Sensor
  • Ambient Light Sensor
  • Magnetic Field Sensor
  • Orientation Sensor

Backcover Open

There's a small white notification LED as well. The Moto G Dual SIM uses micro-SIM cards and there's a GPS chip inside too. There are no capacitive buttons, instead the Moto G makes use of on-screen soft buttons.

Build

Backcover

The Moto G comes with a Black backcover which has a rubberized texture which feels really good while holding the phone but is a bit prone to fingerprints. The front-panel is glossy, given that it is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to prevent scratches. The Moto G also has a water resistant coating on it, which protects it from minor water damage like sweat or the occasional spill but nothing major.

Front

In the front you have a 4.5-inch display which is almost invisible till you unlock the phone. At its top is the main earpiece which is flanked by the proximity and light sensors on the right side and a white Notification LED as well as the 1.3 MP front-facing camera on the left side. There are no capacitive buttons, the Moto G makes do with on-screen buttons.

Top Side

Moving to the top you have the 3.5 mm audio port in the center and the secondary noise cancellation microphone next to it. The bottom side of the device features the micro USB data-synching/charging port alongwith the primary microphone.

The back of the Moto G has a rubberized finish and comes in black color but you can buy Moto Shells to customize your phone. Here you have the 5 MP camera with the LED flash just below it. The speakerphone is to the right and just below this unit you have the characteristic Motorola logo inside the famous dimple which some users really love. The back has a tapered design making the phone easily fit in the hollow of your hand.

Buttons

There's nothing on the left of the Moto G, the power and volume buttons, both silver in color, can be found on the right side. The buttons offer good feedback and make no sound, which is always a good sign. The front and back panels meet halfway in between giving the phone a nice contrast between the glossy front and the matte finished backcover. Ergonomically the buttons are positioned perfectly for single handed use by both left and right handed people.

First Impressions

Even though the Moto G is a budget device, it feels quite premium and the specifications can beat any smartphone in this price range. The Moto G Dual-SIM is at present available for Rs. 12,499 ($210 in other regions) for 8 GB and Rs. 13,999 ($230 in other regions) for 16 GB variant. This is remarkable pricing for a quad-core smartphone with an HD display and that too from a tier-1 company like Motorola. Its competition includes Xperia M dual-SIM, Xperia L and the Galaxy Grand Quattro but none of these hold a candle in front of the Moto G. Same goes for the offerings from Indian manufacturers including Micromax, XOLO and Karbonn.

At first look Moto G seems invincible and the best choice if you are looking for a budget device which will most definitely updated to Android 4.4 KitKat. We will be back with lots more on the Moto G Dual SIM including a look at its accessories, features and gaming, camera as well as the Full Review. If you have any questions about the Moto G or any other phone just add it in the Comments section.
