Unboxing

Moto X is a revolutionary device in its own right. It was the first true blue device made by Motorola under Google. The Moto X showed the world that a phone doesn't need to have the latest spec to be the best or more user friendly. With innovations like Touchless Control and Active Display alongwith several other enhancements and the Moto Maker customization tool, soon became one of the most sought after phones in the US. This time around the Moto X has launched in India, although this one is made in China and not the US, it brings the same excellent build quality but no Moto Maker. Today we take a look at the Moto X Indian Retail unit with a Hands-on overview.

Accessories

Motorola added something extra with the Moto G as well in India, namely the headset and that's what you get with the Moto X as well. It comes with a black wired headset apart from the usual accessories. Here's a list of everything you get in the retail package of the Moto X in India:

  • Moto X
  • USB Wall Charger
  • USB Data Cable
  • Wired Headset with additional ear buds and clip
  • SIM Tray Ejector tool
  • Warranty and User Guides

Hardware Overview

The Moto X comes with a 1.7 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor which has been customized by Motorola as the X8 Mobile Computing Engine. Its not the barebones Snapdragon processor, but a custom one engineered at Motorola. It features the quad-core Adreno 320 GPU. The new chip has been software optimized to run Android 4.4.2 KitKat alongwith additions to make it process Natural language and contextual actions. If it seems a lot of boohockey then you should take a look at the iPhone 5s, which still runs on a dual-core processor and does that quite well.

Display

It has a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass which enables the use of Active Display notifications. The Moto X comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of non-expandable internal storage. So you have about 11.88 GB that's available to the user and 1.7 GB of RAM available to the user apps out of 2 GB.

We got the white version for you which like the other variants has a non-removable backcover and comes with 2200 mAh battery. There are 3 microphones on the device which allows for the Touchless Control to be able to hear you no matter how the phone is placed. It also features Motorola's Crystal Talk technology for better in-call quality.

Moto X Camera Module

There's a 10 MP Clear Pixel camera at the back which is capable of shooting 1080p video alongwith a 2 MP front facing camera. In terms of connectivity the Moto X is quite well stocked with 4G LTE support, 3G, NFC, WiFi a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, BlueTooth 4.0 with EDR, GPS with GLONASS support and MiraCast. The Moto X is a single-SIM device and uses a Nano SIM card which needs to be inserted into the SIM Tray found on the left of the device. Motorola includes a SIM Ejector tool with the Moto X.

Build

The Moto X is quite light at just 130 grams and is build entirely of plastic. The front-panel houses the 4.7-inch display clad in Gorilla Glass alongwith the proximity and light sensors, main earpiece and the 2 MP front-facing camera. The primary microphone too is housed in the front-panel just below the display.

Hardware Buttons

The phone feels really good to hold due to its natural curve at the back which ranges from 5.7mm on the sides to 10.4 mm in the middle, making it ideal for one handed use, even though it has a largish display. The front housing is made of glossy plastic while the backcover is matte, it has a cloth like woven design on it, but is not textured.

Sim Tray

Moving to the left you will see the SIM tray which requires the SIM Ejector tool to open. On the right you will find both the hardware buttons, the volume rocker and the power lock/unlock button. At the top you have the 3.5 mm audio jack dead center and the secondary noise cancellation microphone to its right.

Bottom View

At the bottom you just have the micro-USB data-syncing/charging port. Coming to the back you have the 10 MP camera up top and the loud speaker on its right side. Just below it is the LED Flash and then the Motorola dimple. There's another microphone near the bottom of the backcover raising the count to three. The Moto X feels really solid to hold in the hand, there's no creaking or flex anywhere.

First Impressions

The Moto X is fast, the interface fluid and then there's the unique Touchless Control and Active Display which no one has been able to replicate yet. It has excellent build quality and looks to match. There's nary a thing about the Moto X that makes you desire it any less. It has been build with you in mind. Although it doesn't come with the Moto Maker customization tool in India, you do get several cases with which you can customize its look. At a launch price of Rs. 23999 it might seem a bit expensive but the Moto X hasn't cut any corners to reach this, therefore you get a flagship device at this price which in everyway is comparable to the best of the lot apart from specs on paper.
